Sri Padaya (Adams peak)

"Sri Pada" mountaion (Adams peak) Sinhalese "Samanala kanda" or "butterfly mountain" is 2243 metres (7359 ft) tall conical mountain located in central Sri Lanka. It is well known for the "Sri Pada" "sacred footprint", a 1.8 m rock formation near the summit, in Buddhist tradition held to be the footprint of the Buddha. It has specific qualities that cause it to stand out and be noticed including its dominant and outstanding profile, and the boulder at the peak that contains an indentation resembling a footprint. Sri Pada is an important pilgrimage site, especially for Buddhists. Pilgrims walk up the mountain, following a variety of routes up thousands of steps. The journey takes several hours at least.

Sri Dalada Maligawa (The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic)



The Sri Dalada Maligawa or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a temple in the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka. It was built within the royal palace complex which houses the one of the two surviving relic of the tooth of Buddha, an object of veneration for Buddhists. King Wimaladharmasuriya I (1592 - 1603), the first to select Kandy as the ruling capital originally built a two storied Temple for the Relic and brought the tooth relic from Delgamuwa near Kuruwita in Sabaragamuwa which has been hidden for protection. Remains of this temple no longer exist. Wimaladharmasuriya II (1686 - 1706) built a three storied temple and his son king Viraparakrama Narendrasinha (1706 - 1738), built a new two storied temple temple seeing that the old temple built by his father has decayed. The last king of Sri lanka, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe (1797 - 1814) built the Pattirippuwa (the Octagon). Originally, the Pattirippuwa (octagon) was part of the royal palace. It was used by the king to address his follow countrymen. Today the Pattirippuwa has become a part of the temple and houses ancient textures written in ola leaves.

Wattarama Temple


"Wattarama" is the village that located in "Kegalle" district in Sri Lanka. It is located between "Kegalle" and "Polgahawela" in the Kegalle - Polgahawela road. You can reach there from Colombo - Kandy road or Colombo - Kurunrgala road. If you are coming Colombo - Kandy road, you have to turn left from "Ranwala" junction before Kegalle city. It is Polgahawela road. you have to go few kilo meters up to "Wattarama Temple". If you are coming from Colombo - Kurunegala road, you have to turn right from Polgahawela junction and go to few kilo meters in Krgalle road until you meet Wattarama Temple. Wattarama Temple is most important religious place in Sri Lanka. This was the place "Maliyadeva Rahathan Vahanse" who was the last "Rahathan Vahanse" in Buddhist dispensation stayed in his final period.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is first capital of the Sri Lanka. The construction of reservoirs, canals and irrigation channels during this period exhibited an amazing knowledge of trigonometry and the design of reservoirs a thorough grasp of hydraulic principles. The ornamental scale of the large reservoirs are compelling deviance of a thriving economy and a state structure which had resources from an agricultural surplus and profits from trade to invest in these projects as well as on religious and public buildings designed on an lavish scale. The unique feature of Buddhist Sri Lanka is the "Stupa" (Dageba), which enshrined relics of Buddha and were objects of veneration. It is generally a solid, hemispherical dome, which expresses the serenity and simplicity the quintessence of Buddhism. The "Rajarata" (King's country) is dotted with these stupa and the picturesque lakes which has an irresistible charm for the visitor. There are many important stupa at Anuradhapura.

Hulan Nuge Temple

"Hulan Nuge" Raja Maha Viharaya is situated in Lahugala Divisional secretariat area in Ampara district in Southern province. The temple is located in "Lahugala" between "Siyabalanduawa" and "Potuvil". The history of this temple extends beyond 2300 B.C. The Lord Buddha statue depicting sleeping posture situated in this temple and it is one of the oldest reclining Lord Buddha statue in Sri Lanka made with clay. When you entered to the temple, can see main temple cave where the reclining Buddha statue is located. Hulan Nuge cave is considered as the longest natural cave in Asia (720 feet long). This village got its name because of the large "Nuga" tree, which generate noise when the wind blows.

Buddhangala monestery

Sri Lanka's oldest monastery "Buddhangala" is situated in a mountain over 500 feet high. The Dageba has been enshrined with the relics of Buddha and his two leading monks "Seriyuth" and "Mugalan"s remains. King Saddhatissa (brother of Great king Dutugemunu) expanded this monastery. The monastery had been built in and around a rocky mountain scattered with caves and ponds. The temple which is found on site today is built on a mountain which holds the finely carved stone remains of five buildings and a ruined "Stupa", which is yet to be excavated. The half standing stone bridges and stairways suggests that the five rock scattered mountains found a midst the jungle were interconnected creating a 200 acre large monastery comprising  caves constructed with the distinct drip ledge and remodeled with cement, bricks and plaster.

Kudumbigala monastery

Kudumbigala Monastery lies 17 km from Panama and 27 km away from the Kumana village. It is a historically valuable destination built by King Devanampiyatissa in 2nd century B.C. It is recognized as the first refuge made for "Bhikku". He is the initiator to establish Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Kudumbigala monastery complex is located on a land of 600 acres. There are over 200 cave reservations. The caves were carved with drip ledgers "Kataram" in order to protect the caves from rain.
